Using Lighting to Your Advantage

The further away we get from the original, the more distorted our image becomes. For example, these four untouched digital photographs could never really capture the breathtaking view witnessed that day. Pull them into another medium — such as a publication or website — and the images continue to lose definition. But the experienced photographer knows how to maximize his or her subject matter (even without filters and darkroom tricks).

Passion for People, Places and Things

Unforgettable images or stories begin in the mind and heart of the artist or writer. Otherwise, we would all forever be attuned to spotting gorgeous sunsets, intolerable living conditions or incredible victories. But many of us don't even notice the ordinary, let alone the extraordinary. No. An instinctively curious soul has to be willing to take us to unfamiliar places before our eyes can adjust to seeing. In addition to developed technique, it's the attitude that separates mediocre photographers from artists.
