Case Study — Backlog Grooming

Original Objective

This highly mature scrum team needed its designated business analyst to populate the JIRA backlog initially. Then each newly trimmed and pointed user story would be represented both online and physically on a huge manual wall grid. Individual contributors would move every item through the acceptance, development, testing, and approval process.

Applied Expertise

In this case, we drafted bite-sized user stories based on input from business stakeholders, software engineers, the project manager, and quality assurance testers. During our backlog grooming sessions, we helped the team discuss and determine reasonable priorities, evaluate task difficulties, and make specific sprint assignments.

Recognized Benefit

Because each individual developer previously had agreed upon his or her two-week workload, user stories flowed smoothly. In addition, User Acceptance Criteria had also been clearly predefined, so testers and business analysts could easily verify and validate product pieces against original business requirements and either document changes or obtain stakeholder signoff.
